British Owl Photography Workshop
Tutor: Jack Lodge
Host: Pete and Kate Whieldon (Otterbourne Hides)
Due to the popularity of my recent wild owls project, the demand for workshops and tuition has been extremely high. I feel very passional about protecting both the birds and their natural habitat, so I will not be running workshops at these discreet locations.
I have, however, partnered up with Pete and Kate Whieldon from Otterbourne Hides to bring you a one day experience photographing their beautiful captive owls in a simulated natural habitat. You will get to photograph the likes of a barn owl, tawny owl, long-eared owl, little owl and maybe more depending on the day.
Itinerary for The Day (Subject to weather conditions)
08:45 - 09:00 = Meeting Time
09:00 - 10:00 = Workshop Briefing
10:00 - 13:00 = Photography Time
13:00 - 15:00 = Lunch and Processing Time

British Owl Photography Workshop (Max 6 Participants)
While our falconers Pete and Kate look after the owls, I will be on hand to focus on camera settings, composition and creative photography techniques to give you the confidence to capture beautiful photographs.
My sole intention is for the day to give you the basics and fundamentals to apply these techniques out in the wild, using fieldcraft and research to enjoy these animals in wild and photograph them successfully.

The Hide
The hide itself is on private-land with plenty of parking available, there is a little corner shop if you need refreshments (otherwise, please bring a pack lunch) and we also have a modern studio space for our briefing and processing session later in the day. Please wear appropriate outdoor clothing with muted colours and good walking boots or wellies, along with waterproofs that you can leave in the car if required. All hides are a short walk away from the car, with designated paths and plenty of space for everyone on the day to get unique compositions.
Equipment
A lens anywhere from 300mm on a crop sensor camera to a 500mm/600mm on a full frame camera will work well. I personally use a 400mm prime or 100-500mm zoom for flexibility, although we can be relatively close to the owls for a 70-200mm F2.8 to work extremely well . In regards to supporting your lens, it’s a lot easier to hand hold throughout the day, but if you want to use a heavy lens than you are more than welcome to bring a tripod or monopod. If it has rained heavy the day before or forecast for the day, photographic opportunities are fantastic, so waterproof clothing and a bag for your camera is highly recommended.
Clothing
The walk to the hide is only three minutes but suitable footwear is required if the ground is wet. Please make sure you are not wearing any light or bright clothes on the day as to not startle the owls. If the weather is hot please bring some mosquito and tick repellent due to the open woodland and long grasses on site.
